You’ve seen it on the news and in the papers, read about it in our Grapevine and Centurion publications, and heard the rumors. Like many, you wonder what impact the media attacks will have on our pension benefits and way of life.
Today, no one knows for sure. But make no mistake, there are great political pressures to change our pension and health care benefits, sometimes in the City, sometimes in the State, and sometimes in the nation.
To address the challenges, the San Antonio Fire and Police Pensioners’ Association maintains a political action committee, which must be separate, legally, from the Association.
The PAC may raise funds from your generous donations and monthly payroll deductions. They are then used to help those who ally with us to protect pension funds, when their election or re-election campaigns occur. These funds also allow us to educate the general public on the importance of defined benefit plans and health care plans for police and firefighters.
To do its work, the PAC interviews then recommends those candidates who are committed to supporting and protecting the benefits we earned during our decades of service to San Antonio. The selections are limited only to Texas State Legislative and San Antonio Mayor and Council candidates. Once selected they must be approved by a vote at our monthly pensioners association meeting, or by the Board of Directors. All donations and expenditures are reported, by law, to the Texas Ethics Commission.
Please help. It matters. To date, hundreds of pensioners have joined our PAC, but our ranks should be in the thousands, as there are thousands of retirees from the San Antonio Police and Fire Departments. We have a long way to go. Aside from donations, you can volunteer time for making phone bank calls or block walking for the candidates. And we need to maintain our voter registrations, encourage our friends, families, and neighbors to register, and then VOTE!
